A 70-year-old scuba diver died at Isle Royale National Park while exploring the wreck of the Emperor, a 525-foot-long steel bulk freighter that sank in 1947.
John Nousaine, from Superior, Wisconsin, was in a private party diving Thursday on the wreck located off the northeastern tip of Isle Royale, the park said in a release.
The diving accident occurred on the stern section of the Emperor shipwreck. The depth of this area of the shipwreck ranges from 100 feet to 150 feet, the park noted.
An investigation into the fatality was continuing.
Emperor struck Canoe Rocks off Isle Royale on June 4, 1947, and sank in about 30 minutes, according to Park Service records. Three officers and nine crew were lost.
