A body was found about 150 feet below the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park on Tuesday, August 6, 2024/NPS

For the third time in less than 10 days a body has been found below the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

In a release Thursday morning, park staff said the body of 20-year-old Leticia A. Castillo, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was found Tuesday about 150 feet below the Twin Overlooks along Desert View Drive following a multi-day search.

The body was transported to the rim and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. Castillo was believed to have entered Grand Canyon on or around August 3. Cause of death was not mentioned in the release. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

On July 31 a North Carolina man fell roughly 400 feet to his death from the rim approximately a quarter-mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook. The next morning a man who tried to BASE jump from the South Rim fell about 500 feet to his death.
