The National Parks Traveler — a nonprofit media organization that provides daily editorial coverage of America’s most treasured shared spaces: its national parks — seeks committed board members to help the news organization continue its growth.

These leaders not only value the National Park System and believe in the mission of the National Park Service, but value editorially independent journalism and its role in serving as a watchdog.

Since 2005, the Traveler has worked to introduce new and diverse audiences to America’s public lands, serve as a watchdog over the National Park Service and the Congressional actions that affect it, and provide coverage that ensures that the NPS lives up to its mission.

Now, as the Traveler enters its 20th year of operation, media nationwide is in turmoil caused not only by the growth of Artificial Intelligence, but by the loss of hundreds of media organizations due to shrinking revenues.

The Traveler is the only news organization covering national parks and protected areas on a daily basis, informing the public of environmental, scientific, and newsworthy developments surrounding, involving, and affecting these areas and their governing bodies.

Our work fills in critical gaps created by news outlets that no longer have the capacity to cover the parks as they should be covered. We focus on the kind of in-depth, long-form reporting that leads to impact, wonderment, and exploration.

We strive to ensure that policymakers and park patrons are informed, responsible stewards of these important ecosystems and cultural touchstones. In the face of global climate change and accelerating risks to the national parks, our work has never been more important.

As a board member, you will play a key role in guiding and supporting the news operation’s editorial priorities.

To seek a seat on the board, please click over to Google Forms to fill out our questionnaire. Once the existing board reviews the candidates we'll schedule interviews.
