Work is ongoing to safely reopen Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site following damage from Hurricane Helene. While progress has been made, there’s still more to do before the park can welcome visitors again.
What’s Been Done So Far
- Crews have cleared over 50 fallen trees and other hazards from Carl Sandburg Lane and park trails.
- A debris removal contract is set to begin next week to clear what’s left.
Key Repairs Underway
Front Lake Trail and Pedestrian Bridges:
- Hurricane Helene washed out two pedestrian bridges and severely eroded the banks they were on. The park is working on temporary bridge placements or rerouting sections of the trail.
- Reopening this trail is a top priority since it connects the Front Lake parking lot—used by most of the park’s 150,000 annual visitors—to the rest of the site.
Front Lake Dam and Bridge:
- The dam and bridge were heavily damaged and will require significant time to repair.
Trail Washouts:
- Park staff are filling in minor trail washouts, but larger areas of damage will need expert inspections and more extensive repairs before they are safe for visitors.
Sewer Line and Water Service:
- The park’s main sewer pipe was broken during the storm, cutting off water service. Temporary restrooms and handwashing stations will be installed until contractors can repair the system.
Message from the Park
“We miss our visitors and know you miss being here,” said Superintendent Polly Angelakis. “Thank you for your patience as we work hard to reopen safely.”
