Dear readers,

You never know what you’ll discover on the National Parks Traveler. In just the past two weeks we brought you these off-the-beaten path stories from the National Park System:

  • Jennifer Bain’s wonderful story about “Purely American Furniture” that evolved at Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve
  • Lynn Riddick’s conversation with four women who each donated a kidney and then pedaled the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway to raise awareness of the value of living kidney donations.
  • Barbara Jensen’s story from along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath, a national recreational trail, that runs through Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

And we supported those stories with our daily coverage from around the park system. We've kept you informed on co-management agreements the National Park Service is working out with tribal governments, told you about the fates of threatened and endangered species, updated you on how parks are recovering from Hurricane Helene, and let you know that the staff at Arches National Park wants your thoughts on their timed entry reservation system.

That's just a small sample. You won’t find this sort of coverage of the National Park System anywhere else. And that’s why your support of the Traveler is so important. It makes this coverage possible.

Today, November 1, we kick off this year’s NewsMatch campaign, a national campaign for nonprofit news organizations that is our biggest fundraiser of the year.

Your support enables our nonprofit newsroom to not only help you explore the National Park System, but also to keep you informed on how the National Park Service is managing the system and how Congress is funding and directing the Park Service. This daily coverage would not be possible without the support of readers and listeners like you.

Now for some great news: From now through December 31 we have an opportunity to boost the impact of donations to the Traveler, vital funding that will help power our newsroom into 2025.

Here’s how it works:

  • Through the NewsMatch campaign, if you sign up between now and the end of the year to make recurring monthly donations, NewsMatch will match it 12 times. So if you sign up for $5 monthly donations, NewsMatch will send us $60. If you make a one-time gift, NewsMatch will match it up to $1,000. So a $500 donation turns into $1,000, and a $1,000 donation turns into $2,000.
  • Through the next eight weeks we also will point to opportunities to grab matching grants with your help.

If you’ve been thinking about supporting our coverage, this is the best time to do it. Your support will get our NewsMatch campaign off to a solid start and help keep our newsroom on strong footing. If you believe in the work we’re doing, please make a donation that can be doubled or multiplied a dozen times.

Thank you for believing in journalism that ensures that all those interested in the national parks have access to the information they need to make informed decisions as stewards, users, and even critics of the National Park Service.

With gratitude,

Kurt Repanshek
