White Sands National Park is hosting special events all this week to celebrate its 5th anniversary as a national park. Events are scheduled December 16 – 20, 2024.

On December 20, 2019, White Sands National Monument was officially re-designated as White Sands National Park through the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020. The re-designation to a national park recognized the added significance of the park for its natural and cultural resources. In addition to containing the world’s largest gypsum dunefield, including gypsum hearth mounds found nowhere else on earth, the park is home to the globe’s largest collection of Ice-Age fossilized footprints that tell more than 20,000 years of human presence, all while providing memorable recreational opportunities. It is also home to endemic species such as numerous moths that have been newly discovered to science.

Beginning Monday December 16, White Sands will host special programs at the park’s visitor center through Friday December 20 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of becoming a national park. A variety of events will be offered such as drop-in programs, junior ranger coloring club, history walks, Sunset Strolls, solar observing programs, and more.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
