Spreading aggregate on the horseback riding trail/NPS
Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, which straddles Kentucky and Tennessee, recently repaired 16 miles of the Cumberland Valley Loop Horseback Riding Trail, located in the heart of the park's trail system.
The project reestablished the heavily eroded trail tread, spread aggregate, repaired water control devices and trail directional signage, and removed fallen trees from the established route.
The Cumberland Valley Loop Trail serves as an important link for horseback riders and hikers to access hundreds of miles of the overall trail network. This trail accesses Bandy Creek Campground (the park’s primary visitor center), and a camp store and horse stable concession. More than 200 miles of trail are connected via Cumberland Valley Loop, leading visitors to the developed campground, picnic areas, recreational areas, and river access from nearly 15 separate trailheads.
