Visitors to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park can now enjoy a scenic and dry crossing over Gap Creek thanks to a brand-new wooden bridge.
Hikers on the Wilderness Road Trail, from the Daniel Boone Parking Area to Historic Cumberland Gap Pass, or on trails connecting the Iron Furnace to Gap Cave, will no longer have to wade through Gap Creek. After the old footbridge was closed for safety reasons, crossing the creek often meant wet feet, especially during high water levels after rain.
This made it impassible for those with mobility concerns.
Replacing the bridge wasn’t easy. Crews had to move heavy equipment and materials nearly a mile from the nearest road. Weather delays also slowed progress. Despite the challenges, there's now a stunning new bridge that not only ensures safe passage but also blends beautifully into the park’s natural surroundings.
“The Iron Furnace and Gap Creek are such special parts of the park,” said Superintendent Lisa Baldwin. “Since I started here last year, visitors have been asking when the bridge would be replaced. I’m thrilled to announce that it’s now open and ready to use!”
The new bridge is located on the Wilderness Road Trail between the Daniel Boone Parking Area and Historic Cumberland Gap Pass. For trail maps and park info, stop by the Visitor Center in Middlesboro, Kentucky.
