Editor's note: This updates with additional parks closed Sunday by a winter storm.
A powerful winter storm Sunday led to closure of a number of national park units, including Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky.
Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument, both also in Kentucky, were closed as well.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4 a.m. Sunday morning until Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.. The storm is predicted to produce significant amounts of snow followed by freezing rain and significant amounts of ice resulting in hazardous travel conditions, downed trees, and power outages.
The closures were to remain in place until the winter storm conditions have passed, and the parks' grounds, roads, and trails have been inspected for safety.
