Glacier National Park is inviting public feedback on its Environmental Assessment (EA) for a proposed Fire Management Plan (FMP). The EA is open for review and comment online until March 12 at this link.
The plan details how park staff will handle wildfires, prescribed burns, and other fire management strategies to protect visitors, communities, and park resources, including natural and cultural landmarks and infrastructure. The approach will vary based on location and specific protection and resource goals. Prescribed burns and fuel reduction treatments will help manage fire risks and maintain ecological balance. This new plan will replace the park’s existing fire management strategy, which was last updated in 2003.
The park began gathering public input on the FMP EA in February 2024. The assessment examines potential effects on air quality, vegetation, soil, wildlife, federally protected species, cultural and wilderness resources, and the park’s natural soundscape.
