Mystery Photo 55 was taken inside the Schoolhouse in historic Portsmouth Village at North Carolina's Cape Lookout National Seashore.

Cape Lookout National Seashore protects the southernmost section of the Outer Banks, the barrier island system lying just east of the North Carolina mainland. Situated at the northern tip of Cape Lookout’s North Core Banks is historic Portsmouth Village, which is only accessible by boat (regular ferry service in season). Among the visitor attractions of the historic village are the Theodore and Annie Salter House and Visitor Center, the Post Office and General Store, the Life-Saving Station, the Methodist Church, and the Schoolhouse.

As this photo shows, the Schoolhouse interior gives visitors a glimpse back into the one room schoolhouse era of reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, and no nonsense. BTW, that guy perusing the exhibits at the teacher’s desk is Traveler Editor Kurt Repanshek.
