The mystery photo featured in National Park Week Quiz #6 shows part of the 1903 Wright Flyer replica on display in the visitor center at Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina’s Outer Banks region. The tightly cropped photo shows part of the sprocket-and-chain mechanism connecting the craft’s rear-mounted propeller to the engine.

The plane displayed in the park’s visitor center is a replica of the piloted, powered, heavier-than-air craft that became the world’s first successful airplane when it was flown four times at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. The original plane (with new fabric covering) is displayed in the Milestones of Flight Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
