In the coming weeks the Bush administration plans to call for a delisting of grizzly bears from the endangered species list. Is that a sign that bear management in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem over the last 40 years has been a rousing success? Or, as some environmental groups think, an imprudent move?
While the ecosystem's bear population definitely has grown, and now might number 600 or more, the ecosystem still doesn't have good links to other grizzly populations to the north around Glacier National Park in Montana or to the Selkirk and Cabinet-Yaak Range that sprawls from Washington State through Idaho into Montana.
