Cape Hatteras National Seashore Closed For Damage Assessments

Visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina were closed Monday while National Park Service crews assessed damage from Hurricane Matthew.

According to Dare County, North Carolina, officials, safety assessments at the park units were started Sunday afternoon, and "work crews are on the grounds this morning to begin necessary clean-up and repairs. Services and facilities will reopen once clean-up and repairs are completed, and as staff are able to return to work."

At Cape Lookout National Seashore, the ferries to Shackleford Banks and South Core Banks were not operating Monday while crews inspected the islands for damage. The visitor centers at Harkers Island and in Beaufort were open.
