The body of an Arizona man who failed to return from his backcountry trek in Sequoia National Park on schedule was found Monday.
Park officials said the body of 41-year-old Vince Scalise, of Phoenix, was found at the junction of Panther Creek and the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River in Sequoia. The cause of death was under investigation in conjunction with the Tulare County Coroner.
Mr. Scalise had entered the park on November 18 for a five-day backpack. On November 26 he was reported overdue. The search area has experienced inclement weather during this timeframe, with higher elevations receiving snow, a park release said.
Overnight temperatures continue to be below freezing. Teams from Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, Yosemite National Park, and Yosemite Search and Rescue dog teams were involved in the search efforts.
