Drowning Victim Finally Recovered From Lake Powell At Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

The body of a Florida man who went missing in Lake Powell at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area late in April has been recovered more than 400 feet beneath the lake's surface.

Divers recovered the body of Robert Prescott, a retiree from St. Petersburg, shortly before noon on Wednesday, according to a release from the NRA. Mr. Prescott was the last remaining victim of a boating accident on April 25 that claimed four lives. Mr. Prescott was located using side scan sonar at a depth of 442 feet.

The April 25 accident occurred near Padre Butte on Lake Powell. The incident began when Glen Canyon dispatch received a call of an overdue boating party of six who had rented a 20-foot boat for an outing on the lake.

A National Park Service ranger who arrived on scene shortly after getting the call was able to rescue two of the boaters, who reported that their boat had swamped after taking on water in a wind storm. Soon thereafter the bodies of two of the victims were recovered, Katherine Prescott of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Mary Anne Taranto of Prescott Valley, Arizona

The body of the fifth victim was located and recovered on April 27. The search continued for Mr. Prescott with the involvement of the Kane and San Juan counties’ Sheriff’s Offices, Utah State Parks, and the Utah Department of Public Safety.

The NPS continues to search for the boat. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
