Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials are proposing to build a 50-car parking lot at the old Coast Guard Station in Buxton/NPS
Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials are planning a 50-car parking area at the former Buxton Coast Guard Station, and have scheduled a public meeting to go over the proposal.
The idea of such a parking area was identified five years ago when the National Park Service issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for a proposal to "Construct New Development That Facilitates Public Access at the Seashore." Twenty-nine projects were approved as part of the plan, including many that have been implemented over the years.
The improved access points are intended to protect the seashore's natural, cultural, scenic and aesthetic aspects, as well as address mutual concerns with local communities and governments that have expressed concerns about potential safety issues with road shoulder parking along NC Hwy 12.
The proposed parking area, at the end of Old Lighthouse Road in Buxton, would include a handicap accessible boardwalk. On December 5, seashore staff will hold a public meeting to discuss its plans for the parking area. The public is encouraged to attend a meeting on December 5 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss the beach parking area. The meeting will be held at the Fessenden Center Annex Building (47017 Buxton Back Rd) in Buxton, North Carolina.
