Lightning sparked a wildfire near the Lone Star Geyser in Yellowstone National Park/Kurt Repanshek file

A lightning bolt sparked a wildfire not far from Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, prompting crews to start protecting structures in that Old Faithful area.

By Saturday night, several hours after the lightning strike, the fire located about 3 miles south of Old Faithful had covered about 300 acres, though it was not burning towards the iconic geyser. The Grand Loop Road south of Old Faithful between Kepler Cascades and West Thumb closed temporarily Saturday at 10:30 p.m. due to smoke, and it remained closed Sunday morning.

Backcountry closures included campsites near the Lone Star Geyser, as well as the Lone Star Geyser Trail.

Additional firefighting resources had been summoned, though more details were not immediately available late Sunday morning.
