Two people have died in a spring avalanche on a mountain in Jasper National Park that’s popular with climbers.
The deadly “slab avalanche” happened early Sunday on Mount Andromeda in the Columbia Icefield.
No information about the victims has been released.
Jasper RCMP said they were informed of the avalanche by Parks Canada and that it happened around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday. Parks Canada and emergency crews responded and soon recovered the bodies of the victims. Three STARS air ambulances were dispatched but then told to stand down.
Police said the pair who died were using the area for recreational activities.
Mount Andromeda is just off Highway 93 near the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, which is between the town of Jasper and Lake Louise in Alberta.
