Crystal Cave at Sequoia National Park will remain closed this year due to damage to the access road caused by the KNP Complex Fire.
The Sequoia Parks Conservancy said the wildfire led to numerous fallen trees and rockslides that damaged the road, and that the trail leading to the cave entrance also sustained damage from rockslides.
The KNP Complex was ignited by a large lightning event on the night of September 9. It wasn't declared contained until December.
Despite immediate and aggressive suppression efforts, the two fires that initially comprised the complex merged in the following days and burned rapidly through a large area of Sequoia National Park, and into Kings Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Forest, Bureau of Land Management lands, and lands under tribal, state, county, and private jurisdiction. This fire evacuated many communities, closed public lands, and ultimately killed approximately 3-5 percent of the world’s population of mature giant sequoias.
Crystal Cave is a bonus for visitors who head to Sequoia anxious to see big trees. This cave, located off the Generals Highway between the park's Ash Mountain entrance and Giant Forest, typically is open from mid-May through November. The cave, with just over 3 miles of surveyed passages, is the second-largest of 275 known caves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, and the fourth largest in California.
