Parks Canada teaches people how to camp/Guillaume Paquette-Jetten, Parks Canada
Two Parks Canada spots in western Newfoundland are hosting free learn-to camp sessions this summer. Port au Choix National Historic Site will run the program Aug. 6-7, while Gros Morne National Park will offer it Aug. 13-14.
Offered in collaboration with MEC, the Learn-to Camp program introduces people to the skills and knowledge needed to enjoy camping and a wide variety of activities safely in the outdoors. The program was launched in 2011.
Camping gear is provided — all people need to bring is a sleeping bag to learn basic camping skills, such as how to set up a tent and safely light a campfire. They will spend the night in a tent under the stars, and connect with nature through activities such as hiking, photography, storytelling and star-gazing.
The Port au Choix Learn-to Camp event will be supported by the Qalipu First Nation and will incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the event’s activities and programs. The Gros Morne session will also incorporate Indigenous knowledge.
