Fort Pulaski National Monument, which has been inundated and suffered damage from past hurricanes, will be closed Wednesday to prepare the park for Hurricane Ian.
The hurricane, which could evolve into a Category 4 storm by the time it hits Florida on Wednesday, is expected to arrive in Georgia as a tropical storm late Thursday and into Friday.
Fort Pulaski, located in Savannah, Georgia, will remain closed until after the storm and damage assessments have been made and the park is deemed safe for visitation.
Dry Tortugas National Park and parts of Gulf Islands National Seashore in Florida already have closed in advance of the storm. Cape Hatteras National Seashore staff announced Tuesday that this weekend's planned 150th birthday celebration of Bodie Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina will be rescheduled due to the storm.
