For many, winter is the most magical time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is quieter but still teeming with life, offering a peaceful and enchanting way to explore the beauty of the southern Rockies. If you're ready for an unforgettable winter adventure, check out the ranger-led programs starting Saturday, January 4, and running through late March (weather and snow permitting).

Snowshoe Walks

Discover the serenity of winter on a ranger-led snowshoe walk, where you'll traverse snowy meadows and forests while learning about the plants and wildlife of the park. These two-hour walks take place at elevations between 8,700 and 9,300 feet and are considered moderately strenuous. No prior snowshoe experience is needed, but participants should be prepared to snowshoe about one mile on uneven, hilly terrain.

  • When: Saturdays & Sundays at 1 p.m.
  • Cost: Free (park entrance fee required)
  • Ages: 8+
  • Reservations: Call 970-586-1513 up to 7 days in advance. Groups are limited to 6 people, and spots fill quickly.

New for 2025: Family-Friendly Snowshoe Walks

This winter, families with kids ages 5 and up can enjoy Family-Friendly Snowshoe Walks designed to make winter exploration accessible and fun for all. These two-hour walks are the perfect way to introduce kids to the wonders of the season.

  • When: Fridays at 1 p.m. on February 7, 14, 21, and 28.
  • Reservations: Call 970-586-1513 in advance. These programs are popular, so plan ahead!

What’s Provided for Snowshoe Walks?

Snowshoes are provided for all ranger-led walks, with sizes available for both adults and kids. Just bring your winter essentials, including a waterproof jacket, snow pants, warm socks, boots, gloves, a hat, and sunglasses or goggles. If you're heading out on your own, snowshoe rentals are available outside the park.

Ranger-Led Cross-Country Ski Tours

If cross-country skiing is more your speed, join a ranger-led ski tour starting Saturday, January 18, and running every Saturday at 10 a.m. through March 15, conditions permitting.

  • Requirements: Some cross-country skiing experience is necessary.
  • Ages: 16+
  • Reservations: Call 970-586-1513 in advance. Space is limited to 12 people per tour, with a maximum of 4 people per group. Participants must bring or rent their own skis. Rentals are available outside the park.

For more details about ranger-led programs, visit www.nps.gov/romo or call the park’s Information Office at 970-586-1206. Winter in Rocky Mountain National Park is an experience like no other—come prepared and get ready to make memories in this snowy wonderland.
