Still Tracking Down Bugs At the Traveler

Published Date

February 22, 2010

Folks, the good news is that we're slowly reducing the number of bugs that our recent software upgrade left skittering about the Traveler. The not-so-good news is that there still are a few left, but we're making good progress on ridding them from the system.

Please let us know if you're having troubles logging onto the Traveler, seeing content, or posting comments. While we've had some concern that not all comments are being published, things seem to be moving OK in that arena, outside of spam, which is routinely deleted. And we fully intend to get the "Recent Comments" sidebar working as it was prior to the upgrade, so no need to raise that issue. We're also trying to figure out why MyYahoo! is not indexing our stories.

We certainly appreciate your patience and understanding as we go through this upgrade. Also, this has nothing to do with the upgrade, but older versions of Internet Explorer likely will not display the Traveler properly. It's best viewed on Firefox 3.5 and more recent versions as well as IE 8. If you're not seeing content immediately beneath the park photo of the week, you should probably upgrade to a newer version of your browser.

If you have the latest browser versions and still are encountering problems, try clearing out Traveler cookies, logging off, and logging back on. That seems to be the quick cure for any problems associated with the upgrade.

If you're wondering why we decided to upgrade the underlying software, the short, quick answer is that the existing architecture was growing quite old and was no longer going to be supported. As a result, it was susceptible to more bugs and other nasties, such as cyberattacks. One of the immediate benefits of the upgrade, from a user standpoint, is that the "Search" function seems to work much, much better than the old version;-). Other benefits will become apparent down the road.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
