Published Date

June 16, 2010

With the high heat of summer setting in over Joshua Tree National Park, officials are closing some of their campgrounds for the coming months due to the usual lack of campers.

With daily high temperatures routinely above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in June, July and August, the park is temporarily closing the following campgrounds:

* Belle Campground- closed entirely at the access road.

* Black Rock Campground- close the eastern side of the campground. West side remains open.

* Cottonwood Campground- B loop will close. A Loop will remain open.

* Indian Cove Campground- close the western side of the campground. The east side of the campground, the group campsites, and the Rattlesnake Springs Picnic Area remain open.

* Ryan Campground- closed entirely at the access road.

* White Tank Campground- closed entirely at the access road. The campground restroom and the Arch Rock Nature Trail remain open for hikers.

These facilities will reopen for the Columbus Day weekend in October, or earlier as needed based on park visitation. All other park facilities including visitor centers, picnic areas, and other campgrounds remain open for normal visitor use.
