Searching For Owls At Obed Wild And Scenic River In Tennessee

A ranger-led program on December 14 at Obed Wild and Scenic River will focus on identifying both the Eastern Screech Owl and the Barred Owl. NPS photo of Barred Owl.

Can you tell the difference between the Eastern Screech Owl and the Barred Owl just from their hoots? On December 14 a program at Obed Wild and Scenic River in Tennessee will revolve around the differences in their calls and looking for them in the park.

The Winter Owl Prowl will begin at 6 p.m. (EST) at the Lilly Bluff Overlook parking lot, adjacent to Ridge Road. During the program you'll learn the habits and mannerisms of the Eastern Screech Owl and the Barred Owl (two of the most popular owls in eastern Tennessee).

You'll be taught how to distinguish between their very different and unique calls, and a hike will be taken in an effort to lure these owls into sight with recorded owl sounds.

To attend, meet the rangers at the Lilly Bluff Overlook parking lot. From there, the group will walk out to the overlook and back while looking for the owls. No reservations are necessary for this program, which should conclude by 7 p.m.

It's suggested you bring a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes, and dress appropriately for colder winter temperatures. Please contact the park at 423-346-6294 for further details and information.
