Potent Winter Storm Shutters Many Units Of National Park System

A potent winter storm that walloped the Eastern Seaboard from Georgia to Maine on Wednesday and Thursday led to the closure of many units of the National Park System, including the National Park Service's Washington, D.C., headquarters.

Here’s an alphabetical listing of those parks in Southeast Region that have reported their status to the regional office, with notes on their status as of late on Wednesday – reports from National Capital and Northeast Region are not yet available:

Andersonville NHS – Delayed employee reporting today, with visitor facilities opening by noon.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park – Regular operations have resumed.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site – Closed.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area – Operations will resume at noon today.

Cowpens National Battlefield – Closed.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Facilities were closed on Wednesday; delayed reporting will likely be in effect today, with delayed reopening.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park – Closed.

Horseshoe Bend National Military Park – Closed early on Wednesday; may have a delayed opening on Thursday.

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site – Delayed employee reporting today, with visitor facilities opening by noon.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield – Closed.

Kings Mountain National Military Park – Closed.

Little River Canyon National Preserve – Delayed opening.

Moores Creek National Battlefield – Closed.

Natchez National Historical Park – The park will likely reopen at 1 p.m., pending an assessment of the situation.

Ninety Six National Historic Site – Closed.

Ocmulgee National Monument – The park will reopen today, but the opening may be delayed.

Russell Cave National Monument – Delayed opening.

Shiloh National Military Park – The park is resuming regular operations.
