Whenever I see photos like the one above, of morning fog rising off a river, it reminds me of my days as a guide on the New River many years ago. Rumbling and light shaking in Hawai'i is pretty common, what with the volcanic plumbing that created the islands. Just the other day the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 that lightly shuddered the islands.

Forgive drought-stressed parks for looking enviously at Denali National Park, which saw a record-setting 74.5 inches of snow fall during December, including nearly 55 inches from December 23 to December 29.
