When it comes to volcanoes, the U.S. National Park System offers explosive drama, famously blasting with regularity from a couple of high-profile parks. Both have lately been rumbling away.

On September 16, 2024, the Swiftcurrent area of the Many Glacier Valley in Glacier National Park will be closed for road, parking, and pedestrian safety improvements and a water system replacement. The closure will be in place during the fall of 2024, lasting through mid-May 2026. During this time, the construction zone will be closed to vehicles, bikes and foot traffic.

In 2023, a severe drought in Mississippi triggered a pine beetle outbreak which caused a large number of pine trees to die. The National Park Service will work to fell the beetle killed trees beginning August 26, 2024.
