Using authority granted by Congress on April 27, 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Sullys Hill Park, a hilly tract of woods and wetlands in North Dakota that was named for a hill that was named for a general who didn’t show up. The park, which turned out to be pretty much of a no-show too, was delisted in 1931 and re-purposed as a wildlife refuge.

While it remains to be seen whether oil leaking from an exploratory well drilled deep in the Gulf of Mexico will wash ashore at Gulf Islands National Seashore, officials there are ready to deal with that situation if it arrives.

The bodies of two men who possibly had intended to build a log raft to float the Virgin River through "the Narrows" of Zion National Park were recovered Monday.

The continuing drop in lake levels has forced the closure of the Overton Beach visitor services facilities at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The road to the area is being gated to restrict vehicle access and facilities mothballed for what the park hopes is a temporary closure.
