A search was under way Thursday for a 71-year-old Seattle man who failed to return on schedule from a backpack trip along the coast of Olympic National Park.

The International Mountain Bicycling Association is running a campaign to gain access to national scenic trails, such as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, and is being opposed by the American Hiking Society.

Though located in one of the most urban areas of the country, Shenandoah National Park has an impressive amount of officially designated wilderness. And on September 14 and 15 the park will be celebrating that wilderness with its 13th annual Wilderness Weekend.

An 18th-century British warship that sank in 1748 near present-day Miami in waters now within Biscayne National Park is now protected by the National Park Service under terms of an international memorandum.
