Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Considers Smoke-Free Swimming Beaches

It's tough to beat a warm summer day at one of the swim beaches at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in Northern California: sun, sand, scenery, and…no tobacco smoke? Does anyone remember back in the 1970s when the fate of the bald eagle seemed questionable because of DDT? These majestic birds have recovered so well that they're showing up in more and more parts of the country, and not just winging their way to somewhere else. At Cuyahoga Valley National Park signs of bald eagles nesting in the Pinery Narrows Area of the park have prompted park officials to institute some trail restrictions to give the birds a little privacy for the next few months.

Special Backcountry Tours of Casa Grande Ruins National Monument Slated for March

As with Mesa Verde National Park, much of the backcountry at Casa Grande National Monument in Arizona normally is closed to the public to protect the artifacts. However, in March rangers will be leading special tours to some of the sites in celebration of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month.
