Traveler's View: Monument Review Underscores Problem With Politics

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop maintain that they are looking to right problems with the Antiquities Act and how it's used to designate national monuments, but at the end of the day they're simply underscoring how politically divisive this country and Congress have become and are working to cater to special factions.

National Park Service Scuttles Director's Order Pertaining To Natural Resource Protection

Among the last tasks National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis took before retiring was signing Director's Order 100, which updated the agency’s guidelines for stewardship and reaffirmed its “predominant” duty to protect natural and cultural resources. Last week acting-National Park Service Director Michael Reynolds rescinded that order, reportedly at the Interior Department's direction.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's decision Thursday not to publicly release details of his recommendations to President Trump on the status of 21 national monuments drew strong condemnation and speculation into what he had decided.

Windows Section At Arches National Park To Reopen September 1, But Roadwork Far From Over

Roadwork this summer has really upset visitation at Arches National Park in southeastern Utah, as various attractions have been closed to visitors and delays on the park road a daily occurrence. Crews are resurfacing, restoring, and rehabilitating approximately 23 miles of roads and pullouts in Arches National Park along the entrance road (from US Highway 191 to the visitor center), main park road, the campground road, and other spur roads and loops. Road work is scheduled to last through November.
