The Coalition to Protect America's National Parks has honored Dr. Michael Soukup with its George Hartzog Award to mark his contributions to drive natural resource stewardship at the National Park Service.
Frigid weather and stormy conditions closed many national parks across the country on Friday, from Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site in North Dakota and Badlands National Park in South Dakota to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in Virginia and the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in North Carolina.
In a study presented to Congress the National Park Service has pointed to a variety of opportunities for the preservation, protection and interpretation of civil rights sites in Mississippi, including technical assistance, funding opportunities and other designation and recognition programs managed by the Park Service.
Campground fee increases will take effect for Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in California on January 1. This is the first of two increases, with the second set to take effect in 2024, according to a park release. This phased increase brings the two parks' campground fees in line with prices of similar campgrounds in the area and follows a public comment period that was announced in August 2022.
