Greetings from Great Falls, Montana, where the Corps of Discovery encountered five large waterfalls on the Missouri River that delayed by several weeks their trip to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark had expected a single falls they would be able to portage in a day. Rather, they found five significant falls that required nearly two weeks of backbreaking toil.

Learn About Restoration of Herring River at Cape Cod National Seashore

For more than a century the Herring River, which flows through Cape Cod National Seashore, has struggled ecologically due to a dike built to keep mosquitoes from breeding in the surrounding salt water marsh. Now a collaborative effort is under way to restore the ecosystem.

Temporary Night Closures of Trail Ridge Road Scheduled in Rocky Mountain National Park

If you're visiting Rocky Mountain National Park next week, you might encounter some travel problems along Trail Ridge Road due to road work. The scenic drive that traverses the park will see temporary nighttime closures Monday through Thursday.

Investigation Under Way Into Death of Man At Glacier National Park

Officials from Glacier National Park, the FBI, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the state of Montana on Friday were looking into the death of a Montana man found with multiple wounds inside the park's Two Medicine Valley.

Public Input Sought for the Bodie Island Alternative Transportation Study at Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The National Park Service is soliciting input on proposed alternative transportation strategies developed for Bodie Island at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. A public meeting has been scheduled for August 4. Written comments should be submitted by August 19.

Pruning the Parks: Verendrye National Monument (1917-1956)

On July 30, 1956, Verendrye National Monument was delisted from the National Park System and transferred to the state of North Dakota. Congress decided that the claim of historical significance on which the 1917 national monument proclamation had been based was spurious.

Glacier National Park Officials Urge Visitors to Be "Bear Aware"

Glacier National Park officials are urging motorists and hikers to be extra-cautious around bears. Two bear cubs have been killed in park traffic so far this year, and trail users continue to encounter bears in potentially dangerous circumstances.
