A Meaningful Boat Trip To Gwaii Haanas In Haida Gwaii

“Welcome, family,” captain James Cowpar said as he nosed his boat onto the rocky shore of Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island) at Hlk'yah G̱awG̱a (Windy Bay) in northern British Columbia. It had taken three hours by ferry, van and boat to get to this Parks Canada place with the triple-barrelled name — Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site.

Though Hurricane Beryl was roughly 1,200 nautical miles from Padre Island National Seashore on Tuesday, crews already were out on the barrier island's beaches searching for Kemp's ridley sea turtle nests. Any that were found were recorded with a GPS location so, in the event the hurricane took a hard swipe at the national seashore, the nests could be relocated after the storm.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is seeking support for critical projects that will enhance the 469-mile scenic route. The initiatives include repairing historical structures, rehabilitating trails and overlooks, engaging children in outdoor activities, and showcasing traditional mountain music for visitors.
