National Parks Traveler Webinar: An Independent National Park Service

Linking protected areas from Yellowstone to the Yukon shows the value of conserving large landscapes, not just isolated parks and preserves

As human development spreads ever farther around the world, very few large ecosystems remain relatively intact and uninterrupted by highways, cities or other human-constructed obstacles. One of the largest exceptions is the Yellowstone to Yukon region, or Y2Y, which stretches more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) northwest from Wyoming into Canada’s Yukon territory.

National Park Service Invests $3.27 million To Help Preserve Civil Rights History

Ten historic sites associated with the preservation of civil rights history in America will receive a combined $3.27 million in National Park Service History of Equal Rights Grants. These competitive grants support physical preservation work and preservation planning activities, including historic building repair and rehabilitation, architectural planning, and land surveys.

When and why did the idea of national parks emerge in American history? Several creation myths, or “campfire tales” as Diamant and Carr call them, have been embraced by historians and government officials. Among them are the discussion around the campfire at Madison Junction on the Yellowstone Plateau during the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition broaching the idea, which was then promoted by Langford on behalf of the Northern Pacific Railroad and resulted in the creation of Yellowstone as the world’s first national park.
