A proposal to raise Atlantic salmon in two 60-acre pens in Frenchman Bay off of Acadia National Park in Maine has been blocked by the state, where the Department of Marine Resources said the company behind the project failed to properly source its fish eggs.

A small fire was burning Thursday in Big Bend National Park in Texas, while the high fire danger prompted a closure of all backcountry campsites in nearby Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Crossing ten lanes of California's 101 Freeway, which sees more than 300,000 vehicles a day, is tricky at best, and often deadly, for mountain lions. When ground is broken Friday for a wildlife overpass spanning the freeway, it will mark a step towards safely reconnecting some of the fragmented habitat the lions need as they move about the region that includes Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

A decade of planting trees to restore the grounds at Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania is expected to conclude this weekend with the planting of more than 14,000 seedlings across 20 acres of the site.
