Cape Hatteras National Seashore Officials To Examine Factors Affecting Shorebirds, Sea Turtles

Cape Hatteras National Seashore will conduct a science workshop to evaluate factors affecting shorebirds and sea turtles on Seashore beaches. The workshop will take place from September 26-27 at: Ramada Plaza Nags Head Oceanfront, 1701 S Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. A draft agenda will be circulated approximately one week ahead of the workshop.

UPDATED: Hurricane Hermine Prompts Decision To Close Cape Lookout, Cape Hatteras National Seashores

An approaching hurricane on Thursday prompted a decision to order the evacuation of visitors from Ocracoke Island on North Carolina's Outer Banks, leading Cape Hatteras National Seashore to shut down all visitor services on the barrier island. At nearby Cape Lookout National Seashore, officials were planning to shutter their operations at noon Friday.

Sea Turtle Nests Set Record For Second Straight Year At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The number of sea turtle nests recorded in Cape Hatteras National Seashore this year has surpassed the record set just one year ago. As of Aug. 10, resource management staff counted 310 sea turtle nests, with additional new nesting expected. In 2015, the park recorded 289 nests.
