Though damaged by a tornado that touched down in Chickasaw National Recreation Area back in April, the "Monkey Tree" is expected to recover, though with a little help from arborists.
On April 27, a tornado touched down south of Veterans Lake in Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It traveled northeast for 1.4 miles and was .5 miles wide. Most trees in the tornado’s path were uprooted or had their canopies sheared off. Very few were left unscathed.

Road construction will begin in late May at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma. Multiple areas will be worked on throughout the summer, starting with the Cedar Blue entrance area.

Fifty years ago a nature center and environmental education facility was built at Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma. With architecture inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Travertine Nature Center that straddles its namesake creek is an iconic facility in the park system. In September, NRA staff will rededicate the facility in honor of its half-century of service.
The bison herd at Chickasaw National Recreation Area has officially grown larger! The first calf was born on Mother's Day, and two more have been born in the following weeks. The Oklahoma herd now consists of ten bison: one bull, six cows, and three calves.
