Rim Rock Drive East Hill Closure Extended 11 Days At Colorado National Monument

Rim Rock Drive from just inside the east (Grand Junction) entrance to DS Road in Colorado National Monument has been closed for the last month for reconstruction. The National Park Service and Federal Highways Administration now have agreed to extend the full road closure through May 4. The west entrance, visitor center and 18 miles of Rim Rock Drive remain open.

When founder John Otto first arrived in the Grand Valley in 1906, he combed through the remote canyons like few had ever done before. He dedicated his life to making the canyons a national park so all Americans could enjoy them. Otto wrote a petition to create a national park and knocked on doors until he'd won the support of nearly every local businessman and leader, encouraging federal representatives of the day to introduce a bill.

Overall, though, a slight majority opposes proposals to turn those federal lands over to the states.
