In the late 1700s when Daniel Boone came through the Cumberland Gap and into the land that would eventually become the state of Kentucky, black bears were common and brought the respect of settlers coming through. Today at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park staff is working to see that today's visitors to this landscape continue to respect the bears.

Cumberland Gap has been called the "first great gateway to the West," and on Saturday, September 27, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park will offer its popular "Within the Shadows of Cumberland Gap Heritage Walk." Here's your chance to "meet" characters from the colorful past of these historic mountains.

The Major Road Project That Restored a Park

A proposal for a major highway construction project through the heart of a national park isn't usually cause for rejoicing by park supporters, but that was the case nearly 40 years ago at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. An upcoming event at the park will celebrate the Cumberland Gap Highway Tunnel, which was finally completed in 1996 to restore the historic Cumberland Gap.
