Memo Prompts Concerns That National Park Superintendents Are Being Muzzled Regarding Resource Threats

A memo that acting National Park Service Director David Vela sent out recently has raised concerns that park officials in the field will be muzzled when it comes to expressing concerns about energy and infrastructure development on lands adjacent to their parks.

Western states buy time with a 7-year Colorado River drought plan, but face a hotter, drier future

As Midwest states struggled with record spring flooding this year, the Southwest was wrestling with the opposite problem: not enough water. On May 20, 2019, federal officials and leaders from seven states signed the Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan, a sweeping new water management agreement for this arid region.

Deaths And Injuries Keeping National Park Rangers Busy

Drownings, auto accidents, hiking incidents, and search-and-rescue missions. Though it might sound like just another summer week in the National Park System, at Glacier National Park in Montana incidents requiring help from rangers are up 40 percent over last year's pace.

Groups File Lawsuit To Prevent Diversion From Green River

Four conservation groups have filed a lawsuit to block the Trump administration's decision to divert nearly 73,000 acre-feet of water from the Green River just upstream from some of the West's most remarkable national parks in one of the most arid regions of the country.

Fossil Butte And Dinosaur National Monuments: Prehistoric Bones For All Ages

Kids of all ages love dinosaurs. As a six-year-old, I remember playing with plastic dinosaurs with names like Brontosaurus, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus Rex and imagining about 100 million years ago when those big reptiles walked the earth. It kept me occupied for hours. A recent visit to Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming and Dinosaur National Monument in Utah rekindled my childhood dinosaur interest.
