Marine fisheries experts were responding Monday to a pod of nearly 100 false killer whales that stranded themselves on the Gulf Coast of Everglades National Park. More than 80 of the whales, a member of the dolphin family, were confirmed to have died.

Highly endangered Florida panthers died at a record pace in 2016, with most of the deaths attributed to vehicle collisions in just two counties, according to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.

For the first time in decades, Everglades National Park officials have opened Joe Bay to non-motorized boating and catch-and-release fishing.

Florida Power & Light, which earlier this year had to deal with water pollution from its Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant near Biscayne and Everglades national parks, is proposing to add two units to the facility. A review of the plans by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cited various adverse environmental impacts that could occur, but didn't view any as calamitous.
