In 1947, the same year Everglades National Park in Florida was established, Marjory Stoneman Douglas dubbed the shallow, slow-moving sheet of water flowing through and over this park’s grasses, forests, and prairies a “river of grass.” You can discover the rich history, wildlife, and plant life while hiking, biking, camping, paddling, and taking a guided tour of the park.

Manatees are some of the most unusual looking wildlife creatures that you’ll find in coastal units of the National Park System, places like Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park and Cumberland Island National Seashore. 

They are huge – the largest on record reportedly tipped the scales at 3500 pounds and was 13 feet long – and rather bulbous looking.

Though Hurricane Beryl was roughly 1,200 nautical miles from Padre Island National Seashore on Tuesday, crews already were out on the barrier island's beaches searching for Kemp's ridley sea turtle nests. Any that were found were recorded with a GPS location so, in the event the hurricane took a hard swipe at the national seashore, the nests could be relocated after the storm.
