A Hummingbird In The Beeweed, Great Basin National Park

A little hummingbird hovering as it sips nectar from the purple beeweed surrounded by bright yellow flowers at Great Basin National Park.

This little hummingbird was happily sipping nectar from the flowers at the Great Basin National Park visitor center. "Many types of birds can be found in Great Basin National Park and the surrounding area. A large variety of birds can be seen in the many different habitats encountered between the town of Baker (5,280 feet elevation) and the end of the Scenic Drive (10,000 feet elevation). Many birds such as the Common Raven, Northern Flicker and the American Robin, can be found in more than one type of habitat."

Trails I’ve Hiked: Bristlecone Grove Trail

There are living things on this planet which defy the passage of time, surviving harsh winters, burning dry summers, and altering climate. These hardy, gnarly lifeforms are the bristlecone pines, trees that can live for thousands of years. At Great Basin National Park, you can hike the Bristlecone Grove Trail to pay your respects to these “elders.”

Nevada Landscape As Seen From Great Basin National Park

Basin and range landscape of dry beige hills and rugged mountains in the background as seen from Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is surrounded by basin and range landscape. "The Basin and Range region is the product of geological forces stretching the earth's crust, creating many north-south trending mountain ranges. These ranges are separated by flat valleys or basins. These hundreds of ranges make Nevada the most mountainous state in the country."
