National Park Service Adventure Camps Connect Urban Youth With Our National Treasures

Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park rangers are leading a variety of summer programs for youth from the Knoxville Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley including Adventure Camps. Youth participating in the camps will spend three days in the Great Smoky Mountains and one day in Cumberland Gap learning about the unparalleled diversity of plant and animal life, rich cultural history, and numerous opportunities for recreation in our national parks.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Extends Comment Period For Camping Fee Increases

Great Smoky Mountains National Park will continue accepting comments through July 12 on a proposal to increase fees at frontcountry campgrounds and picnic pavilions along with proposed changes to the management of three campgrounds by adding them to the national reservation system through Recreation.gov. The proposal, titled “Recreational Fee Proposal Information Document,” has been available for public review since May 26. The comment process has been amended to allow anonymous comments.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park invites the public to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial with Music in the American Wild for two live performances of music from 11 composers and seven performers, all affiliated with Eastman School of Music in upstate New York. The group is traveling to various national parks in the country and will play two concerts in the park on June 14 and June 15.

Great Smoky Mountains Proposes Fee Increases For Campgrounds, Pavilions

Three years ago, Great Smoky Mountains National Park didn’t open some campgrounds and picnic areas due to funding shortfalls. Now, the park is proposing fee increases of up to 30 percent at all frontcountry campgrounds and picnic pavilions to meet the rising costs of operations, reduce a backlog of maintenance requirements on park facilities, and initiate needed improvements.

If there are any billion-dollar babies in the National Park System, they would be the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, both of which contributed more than $1 billion in tourism benefits to the communities surrounding their borders, according to a 2015 analysis of the National Park System's value to the national economy.
