Haleakala Visitor Deaths Yield $5 Million Settlement

In 2003, a flash flood swept two Haleakala National Park visitors over a waterfall to their deaths. The victims’ family sued, and the federal government has agreed to a no-fault settlement with a $5 million payout.

Second Round of National Park Service "Centennial Projects" Produces $27 Million Worth of Improvements

Rehabilitation projects, invasive species eradication and biodiversity research were among the $27 million worth of Centennial Initiative projects for the National Park System announced Tuesday by Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and NPS Director Mary Bomar.

Hawaii’s National Parks Are Attracting Fewer Visitors

Hawaii’s national parks are attracting fewer visitors than last year. As of July, attendance tallies were down nearly 10% for the year and showing signs of getting worse, especially at the parks located furthest from the main tourism/convention hub at Honolulu.

Native Hawaiians Don’t Want a Giant Telescope on Their Sacred Mountaintop at Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā National Park celebrates its 92nd birthday on July 1. Meanwhile, angry Hawaiian Natives continue their struggle to prevent the construction of a giant telescope atop their sacred mountain. The Park Service doesn’t like the project either.
