In honor of National American Indian Heritage Month, Homestead National Monument of America will be hosting Jerome Kills Small on Sunday, November 13, at Homestead’s Education Center. Kills Small will give a presentation describing medicinal plants and foods that can be found growing on the Great Plains, in the Missouri River valley, and in the Rocky Mountains.

After traveling 1,975 miles across seven states as part of the American Solar Challenge, it all ends for college teams from across the world with a checkered flag at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota on Saturday, August 6.

Our only previous visit to Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska occurred nearly four decades ago while headed east to Indiana from Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California. Driving on U.S. 36 that spans northern Kansas, we made a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a short detour north into southern Nebraska and visit Homestead National Monument, a NPS area that would be a new park unit for us.

Spinners of yarns and leg pullers will be in force at Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska later this month as the monument hosts the Heartland Storytelling Festival.
