Help power the National Parks Traveler’s coverage of national parks and protected areas.
The Crystal Forest Trail is an easy hike on a paved trail that is lined with large and small chunks of brilliantly-colored petrified logs - indicators of a much wetter, more humid age millions of years ago.
The vibrant colors you see in these petrified logs come from quartz, manganese oxides, and iron oxides. It's hard to believe that millions of years ago, this semi-arid environment was home to lush swamplands filled with forests and now-extince reptiles.
